Word of Caution if you’re planning a dive on Lock 23 this weekend.
Tubie Weekend is a decades-old event that is hugely popular in the area. Teams race in a homemade boat using enormous inner tubes, from Mariatown to the Morrisburg Beach.
I’ve attached the links mainly for the photos – they’re all protected so I can’t copy and paste for you.
Saturday’s parade is at 1 pm and winds its way through the streets, ending in the park. Traffic is absolutely clogged during the middle part of the day as people visit beer and food tents and watch stage events.
Sunday’s race is at 1 pm. It’s quite safe to be in the water in the early morning, but by noon a huge amount of pleasure craft, both boats and seadoos, start to congregate in the water to accompany the contestants as they move downstream almost directly over the dive site. If you choose to come early, note that the beach on a hot, hot long weekend will be nose-to-nose people and parking will be very limited.
Diving aside, maybe you should come to see what this grand event is all about!
